Large print word search generator for seniors

For a reader whose eyes have changed, and for whoever is choosing the book for them. One checkbox switches the whole book to 8.5 × 11 pages with a grid sized for big letters — no separate settings to hunt for. Free to use; free books have unmarked pages and a cover marked PREVIEW.

A large print word search page, letters sized for easy reading

What "large print" actually changes

Ticking Large print sets three things at once: the page grows to 8.5 × 11 (US letter, the largest trim this tool makes), the puzzle grid drops to 14 words instead of the usual default, and the grid size is left automatic rather than pinned — pinning it made any longer pasted word vanish from the book, which is worse than a slightly bigger grid. Measured across 270 generated puzzles, three from each of the 90 built-in themes: fourteen words on an 8.5 × 11 page give 13–19 cells across (median 16) and letters of 18–27pt (median 22pt) — against a median of 13pt at the standard 6 × 9 trim. The exact size still depends on the word list you use; a book of short words prints bigger letters than one full of long ones.

The answers are large print too. KDP's own line on large print is that such books "usually have a font size of 16 points or higher", and a reader who needs big letters needs them in the answer key as well. This tool packs a regular book's answers six grids to a page, and at 8.5 × 11 that prints the answer letters at about 8pt. A large-print book from this tool puts one answer grid on each page, and every word a reader has to read, headings and theme names included, is 16pt or larger. That makes the book longer, but KDP charges one flat printing price up to 110 pages, so a large-print book of up to 50 puzzles costs no more to print. Past 50 puzzles each extra page adds a little to the print cost; the royalty calculator shows how much.

Who this actually sells to

The person who buys a large-print puzzle book may not be the one who solves it: an adult child, a caregiver, or a grandchild choosing a gift for someone whose reading is harder than it used to be. So the cover has to say "large print" as plainly as the inside does. The cover this tool builds for a large-print book carries its own corner badge for exactly that reason: a shopper scanning a page of thumbnails needs to see it before they click.

Printing one at home, for someone you know

You don't have to sell the book. The same generator makes a free large-print word search book to print at home for a parent or a grandparent: pick a theme they like, or type in your own words (family names, places, a hobby), and download the PDF. There's no sign-up. The pages are US letter, 8.5 × 11, so they go through a home printer as they are, and the answers come one grid to a page, so they are large print too. The free book's pages carry no mark from Puzzle Press; only the cover, if you make one, says PREVIEW. To see the size first, open the 49-page large-print sample.

Grades and themes still apply

Large print is a size preset, not a separate mode — every theme, custom word list, and difficulty grade in the regular word search generator works the same way underneath it. The full list of themes is at /word-lists.

For Christmas, open the generator with the large-print preset and the Christmas list: 50 puzzles from the Christmas word list, 108 pages at 8.5" × 11" with solutions, plus the full-wrap cover. If you tick KDP's low-content box, its Timelines help page says that review is taking three to four weeks. So to be on sale for Black Friday, 27 November, submit by Friday 30 October.

What a book costs to print, and earns

Figures below are for the book this preset makes: 8.5 × 11, which KDP prices at its large-trim rate, with one answer grid a page. The other generator pages quote 6 × 9, so their numbers are lower.

Page count is title, copyright, one puzzle per page, a divider, solutions one to a page, and four notes pages, rounded to an even number. Printing is KDP's flat rate up to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus 1.7¢ a page. Royalty calculator for other prices and trims.

The rules every KDP interior has to meet

Page size equal to the trim, margins that grow with the page count, fonts embedded, 24 to 828 pages and an even count, a cover whose spine width is page count × paper thickness with nothing added. The tool lays every book out to these; if you would rather know them yourself, they are all in the guide, with the numbers.
